Same Sex Marriage

December 14, 2008

I don’t understand the big deal about gay marriage.  Canada and a few other countries have allowed same-sex marriage for some time.  The overall effect is a few more people are married and not much else.

When people rant about not allowing gays to marry and that it is an abomination, what I hear in my head is that interracial marriage is wrong, or that the bible justifies slavery.  Most people no longer believe that these are wrong.  Those that are against same-sex marriage should look closely at their prejudices beliefs.

Speaking of Fear of Evolution

December 14, 2008

Elisabeth, are your eye’s really perfect, do you ware contacts, are you getting far sighted as you get older? Do you know anyone who wears glasses?  Maybe your eyes are not as perfect as you think.  I know my eyes are not perfect.

If the universe were different then life would be different?  It is like saying if I had done anything different in my life I would not be exactly where I am now.   Same wrong arguments over and over again.

Fear of Evolution

The religious fear of evolution, is not that it is wrong, but that it is right.

Saving Africa’s Witch Children-Part 2

December 7, 2008

First, the charity mentioned in Saving Africa Witch Children is Nigeria Stepping Stones.  Their website has more info.

The documentary attributes the rise of children being accused of witchcraft to the  following film from Helen Ukpabio’s Liberty Church.

It would be hilarious if people where not killing and maiming children because of it.

Saving Africa’s Witch Children

December 7, 2008

Horrors done in the name of Christ.

What follows are youtube segments of  Britain’s Channel 4 broadcast Dispatches: Saving Africa’s Witch Children.

The BBC reportes that “Bishop” Sunday Ulup-Aya at the center of this documentary has been arrested.  He claims to have killed 110 witches.  Subsequently he switched to extortion. He charges the children’s parents exorbitant fees to drive the witches from accused children.  Even after they have been exorcised, they remain ostricised by the comunity.

Nigeria is a major oil producer and exporter.  It’s population is also one of the poorest, and has a declining life expectancy.  CIA Fact book on Nigeria

Did You Think The Witch Hunts Were Over?

December 5, 2008

When did the witch hunts end?  Centuries ago?  No, they are still ongoing.

OG has this disturbing video on her blog about Nigerian children being attacked, mutilated, buried alive and killed.  Their crime-being witches.

The videographers imply that paying a local priest will cleans the child, but they are unable to get anyone to admit it on camera.

The next time someone says, but what about all the good that missionaries do.  They go to Africa.  They help the poor.  Maybe some do, but other create sick fucks like the local priests.

Oh yeah, Sarah Palin has proudly spoken about her association with a witch hunting priest.

Another Goddamed Atheist Bus

December 4, 2008

The folks over at Another Goddamned Podcast have an interesting take on the Atheist Bus.

Link to the podcast Another Goddamned Podcast #40.

Ex does not like that they used Christmas iconography in the campaign. This ties it needlessly to Christmas.

Their major objection appears to be that they did not like the American Humanist Association spokesperson and thought that he should have attacked Bill Donahue. Here I have to disagree. The AHA spokesperson was horribly ineffectual, but the only thing I think he could have done worse was to try and confront Donahue. If he had he would have been creamed. It was better for him to not get drawn in and to continue to promote the campaign. In the end he seemed the reasonable one and Donahue the raving lunatic.

What bothered most of the AGP herd, was that part of the rational for the campaign was:

“Our reason for doing it during the holidays is there are an awful lot of agnostics, atheists and other types of non-theists who feel a little alone during the holidays because of its association with traditional religion.”

I agree that this statement attributed to Fred Edwords is pathetic.  I joined a humanist group but I did find their newsletter verging on whiny.

In the end we don’t have to all agree.  This group did try to do something. Maybe their execution was not 100% but the got their message in the national news and they will have learned from the attempt.  I can not wait till next year.
